Bar Center Holiday Hours

The Oklahoma Bar Association will close at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, and remain closed on Friday, July 4, in recognition of the Independence Day holiday. Regular business hours will resume Monday, July 7.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence; however, the document was not actually signed until nearly a month later, on Aug. 2. Of the 56 delegates who signed the declaration, 25 were lawyers. The National Archives maintains a list of the signers, including ages, locations and occupations.

Long-time lawyer and 1976 OBA President William G. “Bill” Paul died June 24 at age 94.

Mr. Paul graduated from Pauls Valley High School in 1948 and OU in 1952. He served two years of active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps, including service in Korea. He resumed his law school studies in 1954, graduating from the OU College of Law in 1956, and then began a legal career that spanned nearly 70 years. He served as president of the Oklahoma County Bar Association in 1971 and the OBA in 1976.

Mr. Paul was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1978. In 1986, he was named president of the National Conference of Bar Presidents, and in 1999-2000, he served as president of the American Bar Association, one of only three Oklahoma attorneys to serve in that role and the first Native American (Chickasaw) to lead the ABA. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2003.

Funeral services for Mr. Paul will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City.

Calling all county bar associations! It's time to submit your local delegates to this year's House of Delegates, to be held Nov. 7 during the 2025 OBA Annual Meeting at the Sheraton Oklahoma City Downtown Hotel.

In accordance with OBA bylaws, the House of Delegates shall be composed of one delegate or alternate from each county of the state, who shall be an active or senior member of the bar of such county. A PDF is available online with the count of members per county and the corresponding number of delegates and alternates allowed for each county.

Phishing emails are once again on the rise. These emails may appear to have been sent by someone you know and trust, and may seem to have come from someone at the OBA. Always exercise extreme caution when opening any emails, even if they appear to come from colleagues or known internal contacts. Phishing emails can look very convincing, and attackers are leveraging compromised accounts to make these messages seem more legitimate. If you receive a suspicious email, do not respond. Delete the email.

As a reminder, here are a few best practices to stay vigilant:

  • Always check the sender’s email address carefully – even if it seems familiar.
  • Be cautious with links and attachments, especially those you were not expecting.
  • Before typing your username or password into any website, check the URL bar to ensure you are on the legitimate site.
  • Report any suspicious emails immediately to your IT or security department, and do not click on any links or open attachments within them.

If it feels like Microsoft 365 changes every time you open it, you’re not imagining things. Between frequent updates to core apps and the rollout of features like the new Outlook, lawyers are often left trying to hit a moving target while managing critical client work.

At this year’s OBA Solo & Small Firm Conference, I’ll be teaching a session titled "Office Unlocked: Maximizing the Power of MS 365." This CLE will help attorneys understand available tools within their Microsoft subscription to enhance practice efficiency and improve the delivery of legal services to clients. Be sure to register for the Solo & Small Firm Conference as soon as possible!

In the meantime, you may find it useful to read a recent article by Catherine Sanders Reach, director of the Center for Practice Management at the North Carolina Bar Association. Her article, "New Outlook June 2025 Feature Update," details the latest feature updates in the new Outlook and explains how it can now be run alongside the classic.

While these updates may be challenging, staying informed can enhance your productivity and enable you to serve your clients more effectively.
