“'Sometimes you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, and sometimes in the middle of nowhere, you find yourself' is one of those unattributed quotes I seem to remember kicking around since the 1970s. Somehow, it seems so very applicable to August.

When January arrives, we often feel so drained that it is hard to think about 'doing it all over again.' But we stiffen our resolve and 'soldier on' despite the feeling that we need a vacation to recover from November and December. However, the first few months of the year go by in a flash and seem to require an extraordinary amount of time and energy to meet our professional and personal activities. Spring break comes and goes, then Tax Day, and maybe some vacation time is in there somewhere."

Launching Your Law Practice is a free semiannual workshop for new lawyers, those returning to private practice or those venturing out on their own. The program will teach you how to build a client-centered practice, use AI to boost efficiency, understand malpractice insurance and choose the right tech tools. Plus, get hands-on practice with trust accounting and start drafting your business plan with guidance from OBA staff.

Email Nickie Day or call 405-416-7050 to register for this workshop.

The 2026 OBA YLD leadership election season is here! Dedicated young lawyers are encouraged to participate in elections. All OBA members in good standing who were admitted to the practice of law 10 years ago or less are members of the YLD. Membership is automatic – if you were first admitted to the practice of law in 2015 or later, you are a member of the OBA YLD.

Mark your calendars for this year's OBA Annual Meeting, Nov. 6-7 at the Sheraton Oklahoma City Downtown Hotel.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS VACANCIES

It's time to submit your nominating petitions for the OBA Board of Governors. The deadline for submitting nominating petitions for 2026 OBA leadership is Sept. 8. The Board of Governors is comprised of 17 active members of the Oklahoma Bar Association. One representative is elected for each of the nine Supreme Court judicial districts, as such districts existed prior to Jan. 1, 2020 [Order No. SCBD 4483 (2020 OK 17)], by lawyers in those respective districts, plus three statewide at-large members and the Young Lawyers Division chairperson. Officers are the president, vice president, president-elect and secretary/treasurer. You can view vacancy information here.

SUBMIT YOUR DELEGATES

It's also time to submit your local delegates to this year's House of Delegates, to be held Nov. 7 during the meeting. The deadline for submitting delegate certification forms is Sept. 1. In accordance with OBA bylaws, the House of Delegates shall be composed of one delegate or alternate from each county of the state, who shall be an active or senior member of the bar of such county. A PDF is available online with the count of members per county and the corresponding number of delegates and alternates allowed for each county.

Management Assistance Program 1 (1)

By OBA Management Assistance Program Director Julie Bays

When Jim Calloway announced his retirement, I had a moment of panic. After working alongside him since 2018, I knew his departure would leave a gap in institutional knowledge, long-standing relationships and organizational history. Even though I was ultimately chosen to lead the Management Assistance Program, that moment made me reflect on how lawyers and law firms manage succession planning.

It’s easy to postpone those conversations, especially when everything seems to be running smoothly. But unexpected changes can create stress and uncertainty if there’s no plan in place. That’s why I appreciated this article from Attorney At Work, which outlines five practical tips to help open the conversation: "Succession Planning Without Panic: 5 Tips to Open the Conversation."

If your firm hasn’t started thinking about leadership transitions or long-term planning, I encourage you to take a few minutes to read it. Planning ahead ensures continuity of service and gives peace of mind to you, your clients and your colleagues.

Speaking of planning, it’s time to refresh our own resources on succession planning. If you’re interested in contributing, I’d love to hear from you. Just email me at julieb@okbar.org.
